Alfred Morris Obituary

ALFRED DYER MORRIS Alfred Dyer Morris (94) passed away in Honolulu on January 21, 2024. Alfred was born on February 7, 1929, in Pound, Virginia. The son of Orbrie M and Allie Reed Morris, Alfred grew up with his three brothers Lewis, Joe, and Tom. Alfred met the love of his life, Nancy Jane Brown, as a teenager. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Alfred married Nancy in 1955 and together they left Virgina to make their way in the world. They ended up in Hawaii, and a life of love, family, adventure and service blessed their 66-year marriage. As a Doctor of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Alfred began his medical career in the military. He rose to the rank of Army Colonel and served his country in Korea and at Tripler Hospital. As a civilian, Alfred was a founding member of the Honolulu Medical Group and Chief of Staff at the Queen's Medical Center. He also managed the Hansen's Disease Program at Kalaupapa and Hale Mohalu, and he was a faculty member of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. Alfred gave expert care, published innovative literature, and trained generations of students and interns. Ever the adventurer, Alfred traveled the world, learned to fly, navigated the channels around the Hawaiian Islands on his sailing ketch 'Nunki', and dared to wonder about the meaning of time and spirals in the stars. A lifelong learner, Alfred achieved a deep understanding in fields as diverse as physics, theology, history, epidemiology, botany, electronics, woodworking, and literature. As an artist and writer, Alfred captured life in paintings, poetry, and literary musings. Alfred played basketball for the Virginia Cavaliers, finished multiple marathons, built stone walls and a tree house, and fixed almost everything. Most of all, Alfred loved the family he and Nancy raised. Alfred was so proud to see each of his children and grandchildren graduate from High School and attend College. Alfred gladly opened his home to many family members and close friends. Loved ones are spread across Hawaii, the United States and the world - from Tripler to Queen's Hospital, from Kalaupapa to Korea, from the hills of Virginia to the Golden Gate bridge, and across the oceans to faraway lands. Alfred is survived by his brother Tom, his daughter Jean Lehua Morris (Steve Cuvin), his son Daniel Alfred Morris (Monica Teresa Lehua Morris), and grandchildren Kekoa Alfred Morris and Hannah Kai Cuvin. Surviving family members include his beloved nephews Lewis (Buddy) Farland Morris, Jr. (Cecile Morris) and Russ Morris (Beth Morris). A memorial service will be held at Punchbowl Cemetery on August 2, 2024, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Oueen's Hospital or to Ka Ohana o Kalaupapa. Dr. Morris started out as 'My Boss' as we started the Honolulu Medical Group's Cardiac Rehab Program. He turned out to be a wonderful mentor and also a true friend. The lessons learned and excellent advice he provided me, served me well thoughout my career and life. He remains one of my all time 'BEST BOSS's' to this day!
He and Nancy welcomed me into their home and to some very special events such as night sails on their exciting sailboat and delicious home made pasta nights. Their friendship was a true gift!
I throughly enjoyed the book he penned at the end of his life and I want to thank the family for sharing it with me. Most of all I just wish he was still here to discuss the great insights that he shared. He was truly a wonderful man with an equally wonderful family!
My heart goes out to you all for this great loss!

Much Love and ALOHA to the family!
Sandra
