Annette Green Obituary

Annette Blackburn Green passed away on July 2, 2023 in Kona, Hawaii. Annette was born on August 4, 1923 in Logansport, Indiana. While raising her family, she lived all over the United States and in Belgium due to her first husband's Air Force career.
Annette then earned a degree in English and a Masters in Library Science from the University of Colorado. She worked as a librarian at Widefield High School and Watson Junior High in Colorado. She also taught at Pikes Peak Community College, Colorado Springs, CO.
After retirement, she joined the U.S. Peace Corps and was a librarian at Sir Arthur Lewis College in Castries, St. Lucia, West Indies. She and her second husband, Custis Green, Jr., were married in Castries and lived there 11 years. While living in the Caribbean, Annette was very active in conservation efforts to protect sea turtles. She and Custis enjoyed traveling all over the Caribbean and also visited China, Peru, Costa Rica and Kenya. Annette became an avid cricket fan while in St. Lucia and was a life-long passionate opera fan. In 2001 they moved to Hilo, Hawaii where she enjoyed raising orchids and bonsai. They later moved to Kona where Annette became a member of the Kona Hongwanji Temple.
Her family and friends will remember her for her boundless energy, curiosity and feistiness and her commitment to living life to the fullest. She is survived by two daughters, Catherine Schyling of Northglenn, CO and Anne Gibson-Lott of San Jose, CA; two sons, Jim Kearns of Westminster, CO and David Kearns of San Diego and three stepchildren, Ruth Sandoval of Oxford, MS, Amy (Fred) Nutter of Rockaway Beach, OR and Custis (Amy) Green III of Blaine, MN. She is survived also by four grandchildren: Laurel (Robert) Gift of Pittsburgh, PA, Julian (Tiffany) Kearns of Tampa Bay, FL, Elizabeth (Sam) Schyling of Seattle, WA and Olivia Schyling of Brooklyn, NY; a great-grandson, Rider Brandstetter of Pittsburgh, PA as well as by sister-in-law, Virginia Black of Littleton, CO and nephew Joseph (Shirley) Blackburn and niece Patricia Blackburn of Maui. Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her husband, Custis, and two children, Barbara Schmunk and Timothy Kearns. There will be a graveside committal service at a later date at Mount Hope cemetery in Logansport, Indiana.

Rest in Peace Annette. She was an active member of a conservation club, the Saint Lucia Naturalists Society, during her time on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. She spent many nights at Grande Anse Beach (Saint Lucia) assisting with sea turtle watches during the sea turtle nesting season. She told me that she and her husband Custis moved to Hawaii because Hawaii's topography reminded her of Saint Lucia. My sincere condolences go out to her family and friends.
