Annie Lum Obituary

ANNIE PUNG LUM 93, died peacefully in Honolulu on May 30, 2023. She was born in Honolulu on January 10, 1930, the youngest of 10 daughters born to Henry Lau Lum and Grace Chang Lum. Annie grew up in the Liliha district of Honolulu, and attended the Maemae, Kauluwela, and Robert Louis Stevenson schools. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1947 and attended the University of Hawaii for one year before matriculating to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she graduated with a BS degree in pharmacy in 1951. Annie married Michigan classmate, Bert Lum, in Ann Arbor the following year. Their enduring story of love and devotion was commemorated anew last November when they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Annie worked as a hospital pharmacist at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, the Queens Hospital in Honolulu, and the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. Her career in pharmacy was interspersed with the birth and nurturing of four children, and by the peripatetic path of her husband's career. Nevertheless, she enjoyed and took pride in the years spent working in the profession for which she was trained. Annie was a member of the Te Chih Sheh Sorority, The Associated Chinese University Women, The US-Chinese People's Friendship Association, and The American Pharmacist Association. She loved floral arranging, as well as chorale and glee club singing. She enjoyed cooking and was a passionate collector of cookbooks. Annie was a devoted adherent to lifelong learning. She took many university-level continuing education courses well into her senior years, including a course in computer programming (although she admitted being a source of frustration for the graduate assistant tutor in that course). Annie is survived by husband Dr. Bert Lum; children: Dr. Caryn (Dr. David Gee) Lum, Dr. Daniel (Dr. Mary Deeley) Lum, Elena Cerny, Dr. Franklin (Judiana) Lum; grandchildren: Daniel (Jacqueline Chu) Gee, Robert Gee, Hon. Katharine (Charles Ciaccio) Lum, Annie (Daniel Waters) Lum, Jacob (Jaimie) Cerny, Maxwell Cerny, Carolyn Lum, Kimberly Lum; and 5 great-grandchildren. Private services being held.
