Barbara Mahi Obituary

BARBARA LEILANI AKANA MAHI, AUNTY LEI Barbara Leilani Mahi, passed away quietly at the age of 96, in South Kona, on Sunday, November 23, 2025. Born May 29, 1929, on O'ahu, to William Francis Akana Sr., and Gertrude K. Kane, who lived at 1515 Gulick Ave. She had fond memories with family in Waiale'e, and Mokapu. A graduate of Farrington H.S., she later married Miguel Mahi who would be a father to their four children. Miguel was an equipment installer for Haw'n. Tel. in Kalihi and Kona. Barbara worked as a homemaker and child care provider to infants of family and friends, later employed at Dairy Queen, then at Liberty House where she retired following decades of service. She actively supported her family in school, community activities and at church. Hobbies included sewing, cooking, baking, kapa work, crocheting, gardening, general yard work, and picking coffee. In 1985, the family moved to Kealakekua, Hawai'i, where she cared for Miguel until his passing in 2000. Barbara is predeceased by son, Aaron David, brothers, William Francis Jr. (Verla), Mervyn, and Dayle Pescaia. She is survived by her brother Newton (Virginia) Pescaia of Hana, daughters, Gertrude (Robert) Gunderson, Beatrice (Robert) Ravenscraft, son Gerard (Keli'ikanoe), as well as her grand, great-grand, and second great-grandchildren. A memorial service on O'ahu for Barbara is scheduled for Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the Makiki Branch of the Community of Christ church, located at 1666 Mott Smith Drive, as follows: 10:00 - Visitation with Family, 11:00 - Service, 12:00 - Lunch to follow.
