BARBARA AND HENRY YOUNG JR. Barbara Anne Young, 84, of Honolulu, Hawai'i, originally from Canada, passed away at 5:50 PM, Sunday, November 28, 2021, at Kaiser Permanente in Honolulu. She was born on August 28, 1937 to Florence Bessie Parr & Leslie Hunt in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1942, Barbara moved to Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada to live where she attended North Cedar Elementary, John Shaw Middle School and Nanaimo District High School. She went on to Nursing school - Royal Jubilee Hospital and graduated in 1959. She immediately moved to Hawai'i where she got hired on February 6, 1963 at Leahi Hospital as a RN, creating life lasting friendships, until she retired in 1994 as head nurse for the Tuberculosis Unit. She met Henry Akai Young, Jr., the love of her life, in Hawai'i and later married on July 2, 1973 at the Chapel of Bells in Las Vegas. She lived out the rest of her life on O'ahu until her passing on November 28, 2021. She had 3 brothers, many nieces and nephews but spent most of her time with her brother Glenn (Maureen) Hambley, niece Carol, nephew Brian, and goddaughter Barbara. She loved to read, travel, play card games, scrabble and cribbage, entertain family and friends from Canada and other states, and loved to show the Aloha spirit. She is survived by husband, Henry Akai Young Jr. (deceased), stepsons Rowan (Dorinda), Nevin (RayAnne), Asa (Laura), and Raymor (Yumi), goddaughter Barbara Chang (Kimo), niece Carol Loudon and nephew Brian Hambley, 4 grandchildren (Kanani, Alika, Kristen, and Darren Young) and 4 great-grandchildren (Kahiau, Jase, Eli and Kayson Young). Henry Akai Young, Jr., 98, of Honolulu, Hawai'i, passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023 in Waipahu, O'ahu. He was born on November 22, 1924 in Waipi'o Valley, Hamakua, Hawai'i to Henry Wah Lock Akai Young and Bertha Heleloa Hauanio. He was the second of 15 children. He married Mary Ku'ulei Lee on September 3, 1951 at the second annual flower show in the Honolulu Armory sponsored by the Florists and Flower Growers Association of Hawai'i. He later married Barbara Anne Hunt on July 2, 1973 at the Chapel of Bells in Las Vegas. In 1946, Henry began his career as a sergeant in the Air Force. He was assigned to the 340th Bomb Squadron of the 97th Bombardment Group as a draftsman and assistant operations clerk. He travelled to Alaska to complete his training for 2 years. He was stationed at the Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks and received additional training in long range polar flights, navigational methods and aircraft maintenance under extreme cold conditions. Upon completion of his training, he returned to his base at Smoky Hill, Salinas, Kansas. Henry was known as one of "Kenney's Globe Trotters" and travelled 19,000 miles in B-29 Super-fortresses in Europe and the Americas. Henry was a timekeeper with the U.S. Engineers in Honolulu before joining the service. In the late 1950's, Henry began work as a bus driver for the Honolulu Rapid Transit. In 1960, Henry became a sales manager for Hawaiian Motors, Ltd. and their used car lot was located on Kapi'olani Boulevard. In 1981 he became a car salesman for Pflueger Lincoln and JN Chevrolet. During his retirement he enjoyed working as a sales associate for his friend's Waipahu Pawn Shop in the Waipahu Shopping Plaza. He was an avid golfer and loved to do woodwork, especially using Hawaiian koa. He was best known for his rich and full-toned singing voice, which he used to entertain and serenade family and friends with many of his favorite Hawaiian mele. He would travel often to Canada and other states with his wife, Barbara, and always loved to show the aloha spirit wherever they went - true ambassadors of aloha! He is survived by his sons Rowan (Dorinda), Nevin (RayAnne), Asa (Laura), and Raymor (Yumi), goddaughter Barbara Chang (Kimo), 4 grandchildren (Kanani, Alika, Kristen, and Darren Young) and 4 great-grandchildren (Kahiau, Jase, Eli and Kayson Young). A private service was held on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, for the internment of both Barbara Anne Young and Henry Akai Young, Arrangements Provided By: Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary LLC
