CAPTAIN R.A. REG WHITE Captain R.A. "Reg" White passed away peacefully at his home on Whidbey Island in November at age 89. He is survived by his beloved wife Connie, brother Richard, and a host of friends, who cherish his memory. At 16, Reg began his life-long maritime career working for the Balboa Island Ferry. While a Drama major at Whittier College, Reg acquired his license to captain passenger vessels at age 21. Reg actively served in the California National Guard, while selling and outfitting yachts for California Yacht Company and Hatteras yachts. He founded "Mickey Mouse Marine" to do yacht repair on the side. In the 1970's Reg came to Hawaii to drive the Sea Flight Hydrofoil "Kamehameha" inter-island and work for Windjammer Cruises, leaving to Captain Texas Instruments' "Cecil Green" exploring the Gulf of Mexico for Oil. In 1980, Reg returned to Windjammer to convert the derelict former ferry "George Washington" into a four-masted 1,200-passenger vessel renamed the Rella Mae. An avid yachtsman himself, Reg joined Ron and Mitzi Howard to operate a fleet of sailing vessels on Waikiki excursions. He drove tug boats for P& R Water Taxi inter-island, later becoming General Manager of Paradise Cruises. In 1990 Reg undertook the design and oversaw construction on Whidbey Island of the all-new "Star of Honolulu," a 1,500-passenger dinner cruise vessel with vastly upgraded capabilities including ADA and restaurant level accommodations, steady ride, and exclusive areas for private charter. Reg saw the project through to completion, delivering the vessel to Honolulu and initiating operation in April of 1992 on time and on budget! Reg dedicated himself to the success of the "Star of Honolulu," focused always on core values of Aloha for guests and 'ohana, paving the way to rewarding long term employees with 100% ownership of the company. Reg retired on Whidbey Island devoting himself to yachting, Connie, and managing his investments. Richard "Chip" White, Reg's younger brother, was able to retire nearby, fulfilling a lifelong dream after their careers had separated them for decades.
