CARLOS CAJIGAS MATRO Like his favorite Sinatra song, Carlos Carjigas Matro, 89, did it "His Way" passing away peacefully while surrounded by family on March 24, 2023, at his home in Aiea. Carlos was born in Binakayan, Kawit, Cavite, Philippines, on June 18, 1933, to Dr. Guilermo and Exequella Matro. He is survived by wife of 60 years, Norma, son Dean (Jill Matsuda) and daughters Norlynn Van Nostrand (Paul), and Michelle Wright (James); grandchildren: Avery Oshiro (Jeff), Ellis Matro (Mary), Ryan Van Nostrand, Arden Edward (Chris), Austen Matro, Tori DeSilva (Dean), Micah Wright, and Makena Wright. Great-grandchildren: Ronin Oshiro and Nehemiah Edward; Siblings: Ellen de Jesus, Rolando Matro (Rebecca), Mercy Victa, Lily David (Fred), and Evelyn Pineda (Bien). Soon after graduating from Far Eastern University in 1953 with a degree in accounting and economics, Carlos was recruited by the US Navy. Carlos served domestic and abroad for 20 years, retiring in Honolulu in 1972. In 1974, Carlos became Manager/Vice President of Pacific Savings & Loan, and American Savings Bank, retiring in 1995. From 1981 to 1983, he was president of the Cavitenian & Associates of Hawaii. Carlos was highly respected and made many lifelong friends. In retirement, Carlos enjoyed sharing stories with his circle of retired navy friends and loved to travel the world with Norma. From childhood, his greatest passion was tennis. He competed in college as a member of the Philippine Davis Cup Team and won the All Navy Far East Championship tournament in 1959. Carlos continued to play into his 70's. Carlos' favorite role was husband, father and grandfather. He will always be remembered for his generosity, corny jokes, and his deep love and pride for his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him. Visitation with service and lunch to follow on Tuesday, December 26, at Aiea United Methodist Church. Visitation 10:00am.
