Charlene Hughes Obituary

CHARLENE HUGHES Charlene Joyce Hughes, of Honolulu, passed away peacefully at age 88, leaving behind a life stitched together with creativity. Born in Illinois, she lived for many years on Maui where she was known for her remarkable talent as an award-winning quilter. She founded the Maui Quilt Guild and her art pieces have been featured in many public places, including the state and U.S. capitals. Charlene found refuge in quilting, creating pieces that were works of art and expressions of comfort. Each quilt told a story, serving as a lasting reminder of her warmth. Her home was always filled with color, fabric, and the companionship of at least one cat. Before retiring to be an artist, she worked as a registered nurse at Maui Memorial Hospital and Kaiser Permanente in Wailuku. Charlene is survived by her daughters, Melissa Pavlicek (Stephen Teves) and Amanda Tokita (Steve Tokita), and by her cherished grandchildren, Chris, Micah, and Charla, who were a constant source of pride and joy. The family's fond mahalo is extended to beloved caregivers Marylo and Carlito Farinas and St. Francis Hospice. Charlene's memory lives on through the quilts she created and the lives she touched. Funeral services will be scheduled at a later date.
