Constance Reid Obituary

Constance Spradlin Reid passed away peacefully September 8th, 2025, at her home in Virginia Beach, VA after enduring a rare neurological disorder in the family of atypical parkinsonism called Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

Connie is survived by her sister, Linda Dare Fugleberg (David), daughters, Laura Constance Reid (Tim McCarthy) and Jennifer Dare Lauer (Zach), and grandchildren, Sarah Constance Reid Donahue, Lindsey Dare and Tanner Reid Lauer.

Connie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Charles James Reid, who passed away five weeks prior.

Connie was born on September 6, 1945, in Lynchburg, VA to Birthel Ola Mundy Spradlin of Beaufort, GA and John Henry Spradlin of Lynchburg, VA.

Connie was a very accomplished woman with many talents. In high school at E. C. Glass she was varsity head cheerleader and elected Homecoming Queen, a tribute to her beauty and winning personality. Connie also met the love of her life, Charles, in high school. After graduating in 1963, she attended Longwood College where she played varsity field hockey, was a sister of Sigma Kappa sorority, and graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Connie went on to begin her first teaching job as a Middle School teacher in Fairfax, VA.

After not dating each other much the last few years while both were in college and separated by a long distance, high school sweethearts, Connie and Charles reconnected. Serving as a First Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers, Charles took leave from Germany to visit Connie in Lynchburg for the Christmas holidays. This brief reunion was enough to rekindle their long-lasting love and the two married on December 27, 1967, in Lynchburg. Connie joined Charlie in Germany within a month where they honeymooned and visited throughout Europe during the last year of his tour of duty before returning to Lynchburg.

In 1969, they started a family together, living first in Chesapeake, VA and then moving 4 years later into their first home in Virginia Beach. Connie's many talents included being an excellent mother to daughters Laura and Jennifer, who meant everything to her. For the next several years, she enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom to her young daughters, whether it was teaching them to swim at the pool, building sandcastles at the beach, sewing their Halloween costumes, baking homemade cookies and birthday cakes or making gingerbread houses from scratch, she provided them with a joyful childhood full of wonderful memories.

In 1978, Connie began a 16-year career in business first as a real estate agent and then as a branch manager at Virginia Beach Federal Savings & Loan, where she was quickly promoted to Vice President overseeing all the company's branch offices. After the collapse of the S&L industry, she transitioned into other financial services for the next few years before retiring from work in 1994.

During retirement, Connie became a passionate golfer and learned to paint with watercolors and oils. She and Charlie enjoyed traveling to watch the Virginia Tech Hokies' football games and visiting with friends and family.

To her grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsey, and Tanner, she was affectionately called grandconnie. They were her precious angels. She loved them dearly and will forever be a joyous part of their childhood memories, held closely in their hearts.

Connie will be greatly missed by all her family and friends. Connie and Charles enjoyed an enduring love which lasted a lifetime. They are now together again at peace and in the hands of their Lord and Savior.
