DARRELL YOUNG Obituary

DARRELL THOMAS HON WAH YOUNG Darrell Thomas Young, 60, of Waikele ascended into position on the Heavenly worship team on July 5, 2023, surrounded by his family and friends. Darrell was born on April 1, 1963 to Donald and Marjorie Young and attended Moanalua Elementary. As a proud Class of 1981 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, Darrell went on to obtain his bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Notre Dame in 1985. From a young age, Darrell was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He also learned to play guitar and shared his talent by playing at St. Philomena Church as a teen. Darrell was a results driven and team oriented professional serving in state, city, private, and community positions. With his easy-going and humble personality, Darrell was adept in building relationships and gaining consensus to move general government and public policy issues, programs and projects forward. He was affectionately called "MacGyver" because he could take a seemingly impossible task and work it out for the good. Working for Council Member Nestor Garcia as Senior Advisor, serving as Deputy Director for Department of Hawaiian Homelands and later Department of Transportation, Harbors Division have been Darrell's most challenging, yet rewarding positions. Most recently, Darrell served as the City and County of Honolulu's Program Administrator for the Department of Community Services, Community Based Development Division where he fought to help individuals experiencing homelessness. Darrell lived a life of selflessness, unconditional love, and always made sure to give back to the community and those in need. Never wanting the spotlight himself, he helped numerous local politicians pursue public office where they could positively impact the community. Darrell was an active member of his community. In addition to serving on numerous community boards, he was a board member of the Waikele Community Association since 1994 and served as president for the last 13 years. A man of strong faith, Darrell used his musical talents to serve God as a worship leader at Grace Honolulu Church where he felt it was important to share his gifts and talents God had given him. It was also important to Darrell to continually find opportunities to tell others about God's goodness. Darrell was affectionately known as "The Mochi Man" because he always shared delicious mochi with friends and family for various occasions, especially at New Year's gatherings. Darrell loved to play music, enjoyed good food (specifically pizza and Hawaiian food), and spending time with family and friends. Darrell is survived by his wife Jamie with whom they had just celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary, sons Carson and Zachary, his mother Marjorie, and brother Kevin (Carolyn) Young, and fat cat Poof. He is predeceased by his father Donald Young, and sister Carrie Lei Young. A Celebration of Life in honor of Darrell will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023 at Bernice Pauahi Bishop Memorial Chapel at Kamehameha Schools. Visitation from 9:30 -10:15 AM; Service from 10:30 -11:30 AM. All are welcome to attend Darrell's burial service to follow at Hawaiian Memorial Park at 3:00 PM.
