DAVID LUNDQUIST Obituary

DAVID LUNDQUIST President, CEO, and Owner of Hardware Hawaii Feburay 22, 1950 October 12, 2023 David Lundquist born February 22, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota died peacefully, surrounded by family, on October 12, 2023, at his home in Waimanalo. He was 73. David's family moved to Kailua when he was just two years old, and he grew up as a true blue Kailua boy. He spent much of his youth on the water, surfing, kayaking, sand sliding, sailing, and windsurfing in the bay. As a young adult he would load his friends and neighborhood kids in the back of a pickup truck to find where the surf was breaking, or into town for lunch. He also loved mountain biking, riding up and down Kalaheo, and could often be seen on the trail always with one of his dogs keeping pace. His fun-loving spirit was what drew Ely, his wife, into his life. Their dates typically involved hiking the Lanikai pillboxes and kayaking around Mokulua. David went to Kailua Elementary School, then Punahou, where he was an accomplished athlete in track, football, and wrestling. He graduated in 1968 and went on to study at Springfield College in Massachusetts. He returned home to work with his father to run and grow Hardware Hawaii into the respected local business we all know today. David founded and organized the nation's largest girl's wrestling tournament, The Pa'ani Challenge. He believed that sports and music were essential for children, and often donated his time and money to local sports programs and gifted countless children with ukuleles and guitars throughout his life. David's home was open to everyone. He never turned away someone in need, nor someone with a big idea. He could spend hours talking story about music, history, business, religion, and politics anything but small talk. He loved people and he loved his community. David dedicated the latter chapter of his life to ensuring that the legacy and ongoing success of Hardware Hawaii could carry on and serve future generations. He is survived by his wife Ely Lundquist, their children Kaimana Riley (Sean), Patty Badiyo (Hawila), Pauline Kukahiko (John), Pelita Brack, and Sky Alaibilla (Edna); his 8 grandchildren Elyjah, Everly, Taurus, Tatum, Tyson, Natalie, Gerilyn, and Sierra; and his brother Barry Lundquist (Jeanne). A celebration of life for David will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023 at Hawaiian Memorial Park Chapel, 45-425 Kamehameha Highway, Kaneohe, Hawaii 96744, with a chapel service at 10:00 AM.
