DORIS CROWELL Obituary

DORIS COLLINS CROWELL July 10, 1925 January 21, 2025 Doris Collins Crowell, affectionately known as "Puna," was a beloved mother, grand- mother, and great-grandmother, who passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025 at the age of 99. Born on July 10, 1925, in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, to Eliza Maude Cramer and Cecil Lewis Collins, Doris spent her early years in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before pursuing a bachelor's degree at Drew University. In 1945, Doris met the love of her life, David Harrison Crowell, a returning GI from World War II. They married on September 14, 1947, and following her graduation from Drew, she continued her studies at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, earning a master's degree in Clinical Psychology. In 1950, Doris and David embarked on a new adventure, moving to Hawai'i while she was six months pregnant with their first child. Hawai'i became their home, where they built a loving family and raised four children. Doris was a devoted mother and a steadfast advocate for education, kindness, and resilience. Her career included working at the Kamehameha Schools, the University of Hawai'i, the Hawai'i Head Start Program, and the Hawai'i School for the Deaf and Blind in her early years. Her publications and passion for early childhood education and literacy were lifelong. Doris's values centered on supporting and caring for others, fostering strength, and appreciating the beauty in life. Doris is predeceased by her husband, Dr. David Harrison Crowell and her daughter, Sandra Crowell. She is survived by her children: Megan (and Peter) Sheridan, Dr. Shannon (and Doug) DeMaster, and Michael Crowell; her grandchildren, Kenton Sheridan, Kieran Sheridan, Dylan Atkinson, Noelani (and Ben) Moody, Dr. Maile (and Derrick) Branson, and Dr. Moanike'ala Crowell; and her great-grandchildren, Era and Ever Branson and Cole Palimo'o. Doris leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom, and her unwavering support, warmth, and dedication to family and community will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A celebration of Doris's life will be held on Saturday, March 8th, 2025 at 12:30 pm at Arcadia Retirement Residence, 1434 Punahou Street, Honolulu, Hawai'i. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to Dr. David and Doris Crowell Endowment at Kapi'olani Health Foundation. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love she so generously shared throughout her life.
