DOUGLAS NEDDLES GILMAN DOUGLAS NEDDLES GILMAN, SR., arrived on this planet at 3:30 am on August 8, 1930 and exited it at 4:20 am on February 2, 2024 (Age 93). He was the last remaining offspring from the marriage between WILLIAM KAAWALOA GILMAN and HANNAH KAHANAWALE LAPAKU. "UNCLE DOUGIE", as he was affectionately known, had 5 children from his marriage to Violet Healani Harvest (deceased July 1, 1992): Douglas N. Gilman, Jr., Charles Kalani Gilman, William K. Gilman, Charleen Pualani Manago (Thomas), and Carolyn Healani Gilman. He was blessed with 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren. He served for a brief time in the Navy Seabees, in fact, he actually backdated his birth year to 1929 to meet the minimum age required to serve in the United States Navy. After his tour of duty, he was employed as a Civil Service Employee Painter for the Government and retired as the Public Works Center (PWC) Painting Section Supervisor. He started, but did not complete the requirements to receive his High School Diploma from Waialua High School. However, he was a proud graduate of what he referred to as "Lower Campus Kamehameha Schools" (Farrington High School) where he enrolled in and completed the requirements necessary to receive his GED Diploma in the Farrington High School Auditorium. He also enrolled in and completed classes in his adult years at Leeward Community College. But his real passion was in the entertainment industry as one of a limited number of entrepreneurs who provided the people of the Hawaiian Islands with an often frowned upon "pastime" of gamebird bouts! Uncle Dougie was well known and highly respected in providing locations that was fair and unbiased for enthusiastic aficionados of their favorite pastime, who enjoyed partaking in this activity on weekends and holidays for many years! He also provided venues for other corresponding social activities in that regard! He was generous to a Fault to his Family, both Immediate and Extended, and to his many acquaintances over the years! One other passion that he had was for his mother's place of worship, Liliuokalani Protestant Church located at 66-090 Kamehameha Highway, Haleiwa. Throughout his working and retirement years, he volunteered the paint and his love to rejuvenate the exterior and interior of the venue to display the glory of that particular House of Worship! He wasn't the only volunteer, as over the years, countless others also joined him in this endeavor out of respect for him, and the love of the church. The Hannah K. Gilman Trust also donated the paint supplies over the years when necessary. Services are scheduled for April 6, 2024 at Liliuokalani Protestant Church in Haleiwa. Viewing Hours: 8:30 am - 10:30 am; Service: 10:30 am. Lunch to Follow in the Liliuokalani Hall. Arrangements Provided By: Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary
