Earl Alameida Obituary

EARL R. ALAMEIDA, SR. Age 90 of Hilo, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2023, at the Life Care Center of Hilo. He was born to John L. Alameida and Emily Pai'aina on August 11, 1932, in Mo'ili'ili, Oahu, and raised in Kapahulu. A graduate of Kaimuki High School he was a top sprinter on the Swim Team. Drafted at 19 into the US Army, he served as a Military Policeman during the Korean War from 1952-1954. A natural swimmer, Earl was a lifelong open ocean waterman; Honolulu Lifeguard, Commercial Skin & Scuba diver, spearfisherman, lobsterman, Deep sea fisherman & Commercial Boat Captain. He joined the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) in 1964 and was designated Water Safety Specialist on the Rescue Squad for Northshore Oahu. He was awarded numerous personal citations for many water safety rescues. He eventually became HFD Fireboat Captain & Pilot before retiring. Earl took his love for the sea as a small businessman with Earl's Spear & Dive Shop and Hawaiian Skin Diving & Scuba Tours. His deep knowledge and understanding of the waters around the Hawaiian Islands got him selected in 1995 as the Safety Supervisor on the set of the Kevin Costner movie "Waterworld" that was filmed on the Big Island. In spite of all his pursuits and achievements, most of all, he was a Good Friend and Loving Father. We Thank Him for his Strength, Love and Priceless Memories. Our Ohana will miss him dearly but know that he now swims in the Sea of the Lord. He is survived by sons: Earl Jr. (Carolyn), Vince (Stacey), Vearl (Marta), Eric (Corrinne); daughters: Edythe Green (Edward), Vivian Salzman (Mark), Ernestine Correa (Lawrence), and Vachelle Heyward; 15 Grandchildren and 16 Great Grandchildren. Celebration of Mass: 9:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2023, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Kahuku, followed by a Celebration of Life, 10:30 a.m. at Malaekahana Beach Park, Kahuku.
