Ernestine Tabrah Obituary

ERNESTINE TABRAH Ernestine Tabrah, 96, died peacefully in Scottsdale, AZ on May 20, 2024. She was born May 26, 1927 in New York City and was educated at The Dalton School, New York, NY and the University of Chicago, where she earned a B.A. and participated in the great books program. She met her first husband, the late Judge Marshall Forrest in Chicago. They moved to Bellingham, WA in 1950, where she worked as a social worker before starting a family and raising three children. In 1972 she moved to Hawaii and married Dr. Frank L. Tabrah who she lived with happily until his death in 2020. After 50 years in Hawaii she moved to Arizona in 2022 to be closer to her mainland family. In Hawaii, she worked for many years as a docent at the Honolulu Museum of Art and particularly enjoyed giving tours to school-age children. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Marco Polo condominium 1977-1993 and as President of the Board for nine of those years. During this time, she spearheaded efforts to put the condominium association on sustainable financial footing and to improve the landscaping and common areas. Throughout her life, Ernestine was passionate about art, music, and architecture, and she regularly attended the Honolulu symphony and opera. She also had a great spirit of adventure and love for the outdoors, whether it was skiing on Mauna Kea, scuba diving off the shores of Hawaii, or playing tennis in Kapiolani Park. Tabrah is survived by her three children, Stephanie Forrest of Scottsdale, AZ, Kimball Forrest of Anchorage, AK, and Hilary Forrest of Anacortes, WA, three grandchildren, Marnie Hazlehurst, Fletcher Hazlehurst, and Madeleine Carey, and one greatgrandchild, Esm? Ray Heil. Her parents, Alvin E. West and Dorothy West Porrini, preceded her in death. Tabrah requested a small family celebration of her life in lieu of a public ceremony. Memorial remembrances may be sent to the Honolulu Museum of Art: https://honolulumuseum.org/pQ7aiZ/support-us.

Ernestine was a strong presence in my childhood, and her children have been friends. I'm sending them all love from Tasmania.

Ernestine was a dynamo! I only got to know her late in life near the end of her and her beloved husband Frank's tenure at the Marco Polo, where she was an institution for about 45 years. Both when she was on the Board of Directors (as President or otherwise) - which regrettably was before my time there - or thereafter, she was always the vocal advocate for "doing the right thing." That attitude translated to her day to day life too, as did her avid interest in keeping up with what was going on at home, in the State, and beyond.

I was privileged to get to know Ernestine well when she and Frank allowed me to rent their unit after our momentous fire in 2017 (they had fortuitously moved out only days earlier to repair to their very luxe digs at the Hawaii Kai retirement community). We remained good friends as her dear Frank passed on at age 100 (!) and she transitioned to the mainland and the loving care of her family a couple of years ago. I miss her animated repartee and will always remember her fondly and with aloha. RIP, Ernestine .

Her husband Dr. Frank Tabrah was our doctor at the dispensary where we grew up in Kohala. Sincere condolences to the family.
