Ethel Izumigawa Obituary

ETHEL KATSUYE IZUMIGAWA Our beloved Sister, Aunt, and Friend, Ethel Katsuye Izumigawa, of Honolulu, passed away peacefully at Hale Ola Kino on April 23, 2023. She was 91 years old. Ethel was born in Kuiaha, Maui on May 8, 1931 to parents Kamado Izumikawa and Ushi Furugen. She graduated from Maui High School in 1949. Ethel attended the University of Hawaii from 1950-1954, earning her undergraduate degree. She then moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington, where she earned her Professional Diploma in Elementary Education in 1956. Ethel's teaching career began on the island of Molokai. She then returned to Oahu, teaching third grade students at Alvah Scott Elementary in Aiea for the next 40 years. Ethel was an avid traveler, visiting California, Colorado and Washington, visiting relatives and friends when she wasn't seeing the tourist attractions. She travelled internationally as well, visiting Italy and Japan. Ethel really enjoyed going to Las Vegas, so much so, that she would go there twice a year. Ethel was a devoted fan of University of Hawaii athletics, especially when it came to UH Warriors Football, and Men's and Women's Volleyball. She would never miss watching a game and would enjoy getting together with family to watch and cheer on the football and volleyball teams. Preceded in death by her parents, Kamado and Ushi Izumikawa, brother: Stanley Izumigawa, sisters: Bernice (Anyei) Takushi, Gladys (Yasutaro) Takushi, Kay (Edward) Lee, Grace (Richard) Chinen, and Susan (James) Chatani. Ethel is survived by her brothers: Harold Izumigawa, Tatsuo Izumigawa, Tokio Izumigawa, Kenneth Izumigawa, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of the Plaza at Moanalua and the staff at Hale Ola Kino for their dedication and support in their care of Ethel.
