In Loving Memory of FRECKLES SMITH November 22, 1934 April 19, 2024 Walter James Smith, Jr. peacefully transitioned at his home in Kapahi, at the age of 89. Born in Kealia, Kauai, he spent his formative years immersed in the beauty of his island home. Freckles epitomized the spirit of aloha, weaving the rich tapestry of Kauai's culture and history into his life's work. As a steward of his family's legacy, Freckles dedicated himself to sharing the wonders of the Wailua River Valley. From his days as a boat captain, navigating the waters with grace, to the establishment of Smiths Tropical Paradise Gardens and the renowned luau, his imprint on Kauai's tourism landscape is indelible. A luminary in the travel industry, Freckles traversed the globe alongside his beloved wife, Mokihana, embodying the essence of Hawaiian hospitality. His warmth and charisma endeared him to all he encountered, fostering lasting connections across continents. Through his leadership roles and accolades, including recognition from esteemed organizations like ASTA, PATA and the SBA, he elevated the profile of Hawaii and Kauai. Beyond his professional achievements, Freckles was a beacon of guidance and kindness, generously sharing his expertise with aspiring industry professionals. His infectious smile and boundless aloha spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Freckles leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by his beloved wife, Mokihana, sons Kamika and Kaleo (Stacie), grandchildren Trey (Shaianne), Tyler (Shannon), and Kira (Jared), and great-grandchildren Trayce, Teiah, and Kailer. He is preceded in death by his son, Kahanu, his parents, Walter & Emily Smith, and siblings, Charlotte (Bill) Kaui, Pelma (Chuck) Larsen, Malcom, and Gracie (Ronald) Apana. A Celebration of Life honoring Freckles will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Smith's Tropical Paradise, commencing with a procession at the Wailua Marina alongside his family's boats. Visitation with the family will take place in the gardens, beginning at 9 am, followed by services. In lieu of monetary gifts, the family requests flower lei as a tribute to Freckles' enduring love for his island home and its traditions. Freckles' legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched, forever embodying the spirit of aloha.
