Frederick Morris Obituary

FREDERICK L. MORRIS, LARRY, FL MORRIS Frederick Lawrence "Larry" Morris of Mililani passed away at the age of 77 at Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center on February 12, 2024. Born in Portland Oregon, moved to Hawaii to follow his love for surfing. Co-founded Kauai Images Gallery in Kapaa. Intrigued by night photography, he gravitated to Kauai and Honolulu nightlife, capturing the mod scene in the Phaze and Pink Cadillac nightclubs, where the focus was on fashion, music, and dance. Work was captured on film, prior to digital photography. He extensively documented the underground Dungeon fetish scene parties in black and white fine silver emulsion prints. His work has shown in Kauai and Oahu juried exhibitions, including Artists of Hawaii and Image Foundation shows. Photographs were also published under the byline of FL Morris as news photographer with the Sun Press on Oahu, Honolulu Star Bulletin, and Honolulu Star Advertiser, until his retirement in 2013. Survived by sons John Thomas Morris (Jenna) and Harley Lawrence Morris, grandsons Chance P.O. Morris and Cyrus N.O. Morris, and partner Jill Taosaka. No services.

I never met FL, but I purchased two of his beautiful black-and-white photographs from a solo exhibition of his work at Tripton's American Cafe in the late 1980s or early 90s. They have graced my walls and been part of my life ever since -- masterful composition, brilliant use of natural light, amazing printing! They're among the best of photographic art pieces, anywhere, from the last half-century. Art collectors will miss his talent.
