GARY YASUO NAKAMATSU Gary Yasuo Nakamatsu, 80, passed away peacefully on June 16,2023 at Straub Hospital, with his family by his side. Gary was a proud graduate of McKinley High School, Class of 1960, and the University of Washington, Class of 1964. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army Reserves, counter intelligence in Maryland and Louisiana before returning to Hawaii. Gary held positions with Alexander and Baldwin, Matson Navigation, Seatrain Pacific, and United States Lines, before returning to Matson in 1987, recruited as Assistant Vice President, General Manager. In 2005 he became Vice President, Sales, and later chosen as Chair of the Matson Foundation community support program, serving both posts until retiring in 2019. Post retirement, Gary remained a Senior Advisor to Matson's Hawaii team and its corporate leadership. His career moved him and his family to California and Tokyo, Japan. Gary served on the boards of the Honolulu Police Deputies and the McKinley High School Foundation. Gary was a loyal and staunch supporter of UW Husky Athletics, and a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees and the San Francisco 49ers; he loved playing golf with business associates and friends. Gary was predeceased by his loving wife, Gail Ortiz Nakamatsu, and his parents Albert Nakamatsu and Doris Takaezu. He is survived by son Greg Nakamatsu, daughter Gaylynn Nakamatsu and granddaughter Gabbie, who was his "best buddy" and star of his eye. Gary is also survived by brothers, Robert Nakamatsu and Harvey Nakamatsu, and sisters, Barbara Nakamatsu and JoAnn Nakamatsu, all of Honolulu, HI. Gary was a loving and devoted husband, father, Papa and friend. He was loved and respected by everyone whose lives he touched, personally and professionally. He acted as an advisor and mentor to many in the community and the shipping industry throughout his lifetime, and often business associates and clients became life long friends.
