GAYLORD CARREIRA Obituary

GAYLORD GARRICK CARREIRA 60, of Nanakuli, passed away peacefully at home in Nanakuli on February 25, 2023. Gaylord was born on October 19, 1962 in Honolulu, Hawaii as the youngest of 8 children. He grew up believing he was just like everyone else and could do anything he set his mind to. Gaylord was a gifted athlete, winning numerous medals in Hawaii Special Olympics, especially in bowling. Gaylord even earned his black belt from Kuwili Martial Arts Center, surprising his family with his skills at breaking bricks. He constantly amazed his family with his talents. Gaylord loved spending time with his family and spent countless hours playing games and telling jokes to his many nieces and nephews. But perhaps Gaylord was most known for his love of football a passion he shared with his father. He was fortunate to be able to help the University of Hawaii football team in the late '80s and early '90s. This love of football parlayed him into a world none of the family could have ever imagined for him. He was the family celebrity being recognized everywhere he went, and he savored every moment. After he left the University of Hawaii football program, he went on to help the football programs at St. Louis School, Waipahu High School, and Nanakuli High School. While he brought so much hype and happiness to all the fans at the games, it was Gaylord who received all the happiness and excitement being able to do what he loved without the barriers of his disability. Gaylord lived life to the fullest and on his own terms. Gaylord is predeceased by his parents Lancelot, Sr. and Mae, and brothers Edward and Galahad, Sr. He is survived by his brother Lancelot, Jr. (Moana), sisters: Brenda, Donna, Greer, Maeda (Keith), sisters-in-law: Teri and Maile, hanai sister: Joyce, and many nieces and nephews. Wake services will be held on May 17, 2023 at Mililani Mortuary Makai Chapel; Viewing: 5:30 p.m.; Service at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on May 18, 2023 at St. Jude Church in Kapolei, Viewing: 9:00 a.m.; Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at 12:30 p.m. at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Casual attire.
