Gene Doo Obituary

GENE WAI DOO, M.D. Gene Wai Doo was born on August 21, 1939 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended Punahou School and was an active student-athlete focused on his academics and tennis-winning the Hawaii State Men's Tennis Championship title in 1956 & 1957. Gene attended Colgate University where he captained the tennis team and added boxing to his athletic pursuits. Transitioning to focus on his career, Gene attended Jefferson Medical College, interned at York Hospital, and did his residency at Ohio State University. Dr. Doo's medical office was wherever his patients were. For more than 40 years, the otolaryngologist regularly traveled to underserved communities to provide care with humor, kindness, and compassion. He also trained numerous medical students as an assistant professor at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. As a multifaceted man, Dr. Doo was a lover of food and wine and a qualified sommelier. He brought laughter to all and enjoyed every sip and bite no matter where he was in the world. Dr. Gene Wai Doo, doting husband and loving family man, passed peacefully at home on February 5, 2025. He is survived by: Cecilia Ching Doo, wife, and daughters Michelle Doo Van Rafelghem (Francis, son-in-law, Luke & Erin, grandchildren), Cheryl Doo Schrady (Peter, son-in-law, Emma & Jack, grandchildren), Laurie-Ann Doo Look (Michael, son-in-law, Ashley & Alex, grandchildren) & Christine Doo. Doing a Doo Friday in the OR shaped a work ethic with a sense of humor unmatched. He was a great colleague and friend in surgery, at the tennis club or any dining table. I treasure my memories of Gene's gatherings and send aloha to his ohana.

Dr Doo was always cheerful and up beat! He performed PE surgery on my son when he was just 3 years old! At that time the youngest children were 5 years old before having the surgery. With Dr Doo´s assurances and kindness, he did it in less than 20 minutes and my son never had a problem since then.
We thank you Dr Doo! And appreciate you and will miss you

Remembering Dr. Gene as the doctor who would sing in the hallways of his offices, a vibrant and generous gentleman with a sense of humor. He must have been a wonderful husband and dad, judging by the joy in the eyes seen in his amazing wife and good children. He was a glow and a gleam in this world that could use more like him!

Dr. Door took care of my family for many years. His kindness and humor made it so much less scary to go to "the doctor". Blessed to have known him.
