GUSTAV SCHUMAN Obituary

GUSTAV RICHARD SCHUMAN July 30, 1958 October 29, 2025 Richard Schuman, a respected businessman, pilot, and beloved son of Hawai'i, passed away at his home in Kailua, O'ahu, on October 29, 2025, after a five-year battle with cancer. Richard, known for his resilience, work ethic, and aloha spirit, fought hard and outlived every prognosis. His strength, willpower, and determination never wavered. Born in Honolulu on July 30, 1958, Richard was part of the Schuman family, whose name has long been tied to O'ahu's transportation history. A graduate of Damien High School (Class of 1976), he later earned a degree in Business from Northwood University in Michigan, where he met his wife of 45 years, Diane. After returning home, Richard worked alongside his father at Schuman Carriage Company and NAPA Auto Parts. He also served in the Hawai'i National Guard for over 13 years, attaining the rank of Captain. Always seeking adventure, Richard discovered his love for flying and turned it into a legacy that helped shape Hawai'i's aviation community. What began with a single helicopter grew into Makani Kai Helicopters and later Makani Kai Airan airline dedicated to serving the people of Moloka'i. His priority was always ensuring they could rely on safe, dependable interisland service. "From an early age, Dad emphasized the importance of telling the truth. He taught me the value of learning someone's name and the lasting impression you could make by remembering it. Finally, he encouraged confidence: 'Most people won't question you if you act like you know what you're doing,' he said." Kaleolani, daughter Makani Kai Helicopters later became Magnum Helicopters, flying film crews for every season of Hawai'i Five-0 and Magnum P.I. Richard even stepped in as a body double and appeared in several major motion pictures, proudly adding "actor" to his r?sum?. Most recently, he helped expand Trident Adventures, where he became a boat captain and continued sharing his love of excitement and community. "My dad taught me how to steer a boat, drive a stick shift, and back a trailera skill I've realized most people today don't have. Most Saturdays from middle school through high school were spent at rodeos or roping practice together, making some of the best memories of my childhood." Kawena, daughter When Richard took an interest in something, he went all in. Whether it was racing stock cars, scuba diving, motorcycle riding, flying helicopters and planes, or captaining boats, he learned everything he could and gave it his all. "He would often say, 'Life is about learningwe gotta try everything once!' As a father, he taught me that same thrill-seeking spirit. Whether it was flying, rodeoing, hiking, skydiving, or jumping from his helicopter into the ocean, I followed his adventurous heart." Mahealani, daughter Richard is survived by his wife, Diane; daughters, Kaleolani, Kawena, and Mahealani; nine grandchildren; stepmother, Kerry; brother, Skip; and sister, Dutchess. Richard loved a good joke, a bowl of ice cream, a warm hug, and any movie starring Stallone. In his final years, Richard's focus shifted from business to familyespecially his greatest joy, being a grandpa. A private family service was held in his honor. In his honor, donations may be made to the Children's Justice Center of Hawai'i, the Hawai'i High School Rodeo Association, or by paying off unpaid school lunch balances at local elementary schools. More than anything, Richard would want you to honor him by celebrating family, helping your community, and living with integrityas he did.

Richard and I met at Maunawili Elementary School in grade 3. We kept in touch over the years. He loved his family, was so proud of his beautiful girls and found joy with his grandchildren. I am sad to hear of his passing.
