Harumi Hirata Obituary
HARUMI NISHI HIRATA 89, of Kaneohe, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2025. Harumi was born in Hilo, Hawaii and was a graduate of Hilo High School Class of '53. She went on to continue her studies at The Queen's Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1956. It was at Hilo High School that she met the love of her life and future husband, Edward Hirata. They were married for 68 years. Harumi worked for a few years as a Registered Nurse before becoming a stay at home mom of her three children. Harumi was very involved with her children's extracurricular activities which included scouting, Kaneohe Little League baseball and Campfire Girls amongst many other things. Early on, Edward and Harumi discovered the game of golf, a passion they shared and passed on to their sons, both of whom played on their high school golf team. They loved to play golf with their friends, including their beloved "Mix and Match" group, and went on many golf trips together. Like Edward, Harumi was a die-hard UH fan and supported all the sports teams whether they were champions or winless. They enjoyed following the team to the mainland to watch them play and would usually make a stop in Las Vegas on their way home. The poker machine was Harumi's favorite even if she never got the royal flush she always wanted. Her favorite vacation destination was Japan, mainly for the food, culture and shopping. She and Edward traveled with their "Tomodachi Group" all over Japan and made so many lasting memories. After the pandemic, it was her wish to make one last trip to Japan and she and Edward were so happy to finally be able to take their entire family to Tokyo in the Spring of 2024. She is survived by her husband, Edward Hirata; sons, Dean (Cathy) and Mark (Stacey); daughter, Cathy Ann Yuen (Brooks); grandchildren, Jordan and Zack Yuen; Griffin and Piper Hirata; and Matt Matsuda. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Nuuanu Memorial Park and Mortuary, East Chapel. Visitation at 10:00, Service at 11:00.
