Herbert Dias Obituary

HERBERT MANUEL DIAS Deceased on July 14, 2025. Herbert was born in Honolulu, HI on February 19, 1924. He was the eldest son of Manuel Dias De Sousa (born in Ahualoa, Hamakua District in 1896) and Laura Fernandes (born in Honolulu in 1901) and was raised in Kaimuki alongside four other siblings. Herbert began his education at St. Patrick Elementary School in Kaimuki, transferred to St. Louis College in the fifth grade, and graduated in 1942. Thereafter, he began working in the Territorial Tax Office in 1942. He was drafted into the Army in November of 1944 where he served in the Philippines and then Okinawa in the Intelligence Office. Herbert was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946 and resumed his work with the Territorial Tax Office where he spent 44 years serving the people of Hawaii. He served with former Governor George Ariyoshi as a cabinet member in the role of Director of Taxation until he retired in late 1986. Following his retirement from State employment, he devoted many years to assisting Kupuna with their tax filings as part of the Department of Taxation outreach program. Herbert is survived by his two daughters, Cynthia Dias-Potkalesky of Coppell, TX and Deborah Dias-Jensen of Danville, CA; his youngest sister, Miriam Foltz of Kaawa, HI; along with four grandchildren, one great granddaughter and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. His Ohana will miss the love, support, and guidance that he provided over three generations as the patriarch of the family. May he rest in peace with the Lord.
