Jack Schweigert Obituary

JACK F. SCHWEIGERT Jack (John) F. Schweigert, a devoted father, grandfather, attorney, and community leader, passed away at his home in Honolulu on August 15, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on July 26, 1947, in Buffalo, NY, and raised in Erie, PA, Jack was drafted into the Army and served during the Vietnam War. After law school, he moved to Hawaii, where his career left a lasting impact on both law and community service. Jack was known for his work in environmental and civil rights law, with landmark cases like Stop H-3 Association v. Coleman, setting historic preservation precedents, and Outdoor Circle v. Castle Estate, protecting Kawainui Marsh. His expertise shaped legal precedents in environmental protection, civil rights, and criminal justice, and he was recognized in over 31 published opinions. Jack was also a pillar of his community, serving as president of the Lions Club and actively involved in legal outreach programs. Predeceased by his wife, Valerie, he is survived by his children, Carly and Scott, and five grand- children, all of whom continue to honor his values and principles in their own lives. A celebration of life will be held at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu on October 5, 2024, at 10 AM.

I miss Jack's Christmas cards. I actually saved some of them because they bore such a special message that I loved to reread every year.

I missing. I tried calling and no replies. First year not to get a Christmas Card from him
Tried calling again today. Disconnected numbers. Googled him and found this obituary. We went to High School together. Have been in touch every Holiday since 1981 after running into him at a small store in HOVE, Hawaii Island. Sad. I did get a letter from him in July 2024. RIP Jack.

Dear Carly and Scott,
I am a former law school classmate of your dad. I grew up in Erie and currently live there. Jack was one of the most optimistic people that I have ever known. He never seemed to become discouraged when confronted with a challenge. Those who knew him remember his-what seemed to be- perpetual smile. A few years ago my wife and I were in Honolulu and had the chance to have dinner with him. It was a wonderful time and we had a chance to catch up after many years. He obviously made his mark on the legal profession. But, more importantly, he left his mark on all of us who knew him. After reading his obituary one of his former roommates expressed it best for all of us when he said, "my heart is broken". At this difficult time, may God comfort you and your family with the knowledge that your dad touched many people during his lifetime. His life was truly one well-lived.

I met Jack in 1992. He was handing out information flyers at Ala Moana Beach when he ran for mayor of Honolulu. Later, he became my good friend and neighbor. Jack shared many things that helped improve my life and was always there for me. I will miss Jack Schweigert.

I played tennis with Jack on Sundays for the last two years. He played with such grace and humor despite his mounting health obstacles. He send a Christmas card saying how he valued our friendship. I will miss him.

Jack and I were platonic pals. Actually, I think the only reason he visited me was to play with my dog, a beautiful border collie. One day he came and said there was an abandoned boat on the beach that I just had to see. Of course, the dog had to come with us. On the way home, we stopped at Arby's which had just opened in 1968. Bear in mind, at that time a McDonald's burger was 15 cents. An Arby sandwich was 69 cents. He ordered four: two for him, one for me, and one for my dog. No surprise that he was a generous donor to his community. I know he will be missed by many.
