James Arakaki Obituary

JAMES JIMMY ARAKAKI James Masayuki Arakaki, of Kalama Valley, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on October 7, 2024. He was the youngest of five siblings born in Kukuihaele on the Big Island of Hawaii, but spent his first seven years of childhood in Okinawa. Jimmy's passions were his Catholic religion, his Okinawan heritage, devotion to his family, and watching pro football on TV. Friends and family will remember him for his love of the ocean as a deep sea diver, boat captain of Mrs. Henry J. Kaiser's 65-foot cabin cruiser while residing on the Kaiser Estate, and as a marine mechanic for Holmes & Narver on Johnston Island. He returned to Honolulu as a heavy-duty mechanic for Johiro Brothers and Tower Construction before retiring from Operating Engineers Local 3 in 1998 and remained a union member for 54 years. Jimmy is survived by his wife Shirley of 57 years, a daughter Kathleen Arakaki, a son James (LiAnn) Arakaki, Jr., and three precious grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends who will miss him dearly. Rest in God's love, Jimmy! You will forever be in our hearts! Private services were held. Arrangements Provided By: Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary LLC

Jimmy took care of me growing up in Kuliouou Valley. He had a '46 Ford that was immaculate that was his pride and joy. He and Joe Kekoa were the best of friends. He learned how to build lures for marlin fishing from West Vannatta who crewed for Henry Chee on the Big Island and took over the Malia when Chee retired. May he rest in peace.
