JANET CHAMBERLAND Obituary
JANET SPRAGUE HALL CHAMBERLAND Janet Sprague Hall Chamberland passed peacefully on November 25, 2024, in her Makiki Heights home, with family and friends by her side. She was born on June 30, 1937, in Hilo, where she enjoyed the formative years of her life. Wearing blue jeans and men's aloha shirtsand finding footwear entirely too cumbersomeshe passed the time with her lifelong friends exploring the lush forests surrounding the neighborhood, jumping from the cliffs of the Wailuku River, and, from time to time, riding the sampan to the end of the line, and walking in the hot sun to the Hilo Yacht Club to swim in the pool and ocean. Janet also spent many hours with friends exploring the forests, both on and off the trails, of Volcano National Park. Vacations often included a two-hour and eight-minute drive to Kona with her parents and brother, Garvie, to spend time at the family beach house. Janet relocated to Oahu when she was 15 years old after her father was promoted to president of Honolulu Iron Works. After graduating from Punahou School, she attended Mills College in Oakland, California, before transferring to UC Davis, where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. Janet moved to Kauai in the early '60s, where she had her two children and worked as a classroom assistant. She also served as President of the Kauai Humane Society. After relocating again to Oahu in the early '70s, Janet worked at Variety School (formerly Variety Club School) with special needs children, where she met and enjoyed lifelong friendships. She later earned a Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of Hawaii and went on to work for the DOE, teaching special education at Niu Valley Middle and Kalani High Schools before later accepting a position at the Honolulu District Office. In 1981, Janet married the love of her life, Charles J.W. Chamberland, with whom she found deep joy and peace until his passing in 2013. Janet will be remembered for her loving kindness and non-judgmental acceptance, which she extended freely to all without hesitation. Janet is survived by her brother William Garvie Hall (Wendy), her son John Kirkpatrick (Lai Kwan), her daughter Sharon Kirkpatrick (Jim), stepson David Chamberland (Yukari), grandchildren Sophia, Charles (Chaz), Nicole, and Zach, and her much-loved nieces and nephews. The service will be held at Newman Center in Manoa on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.
