JANICE A. OKUDARA Devoted mother, grandmother, and friend to many, passed peacefully in Honolulu at the age of 103 on September 22, 2023. Born in Huelo, Maui, she was the fourth of six children to Ryosei and Nae Aka. The joy of her long life was when she retired in her early sixties to raise not only her six grandchildren, but to also help care for the children of dear family friends. When she retired, she learned how to swim by taking classes at Ala Moana Beach from the Red Cross. Her passion became her early morning swim on Saturday at Ala Moana Beach and Sunday hikes on Oahu with the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain club and later in her 70's with her senior hiking group. Her love of hiking and nature took her to the neighbor islands as well as Alaska, Colorado, and California. Her husband, Tokio, passed away in 2011. She is survived by her sons: Jon (JoAnne dec.), George and Colin; daughters Mona (Mark) Fukuhara and Susan (Paul) Tateishi; grandchildren: Kai and Lea Okudara, Scott and Sara Fukuhara, Reece and Mari Tateishi; and her great grandson Keanu Gunderson.
