Joan Husted Obituary

JOAN L. HUSTED Joan Lee Husted, a highly respected advocate in Hawaii's public education and labor movement, passed away on October 2, 2023, at her home in Makiki. She was born in St. Clair, Michigan to Harry Robert Husted and Cecelia Paulin Husted in 1937. Along with other teacher leaders of the time, she was instrumental in the formation of the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) and in setting the tone for HSTA's reputation and bargaining prowess. She was also an active participant in a number of think tanks and organizations. At the time of her passing, Joan was serving as Vice President of the Hawaii Education Association (HEA), a non-profit organization promoting professionalism and quality education in Hawaii. Joan is survived by her daughter Tina Lacy and her her son-in-law; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; her brother Harry Robert Husted of Texas, along with a niece, a nephew, grandnieces and grandnephews. A Celebration of Life will be held from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at the Keehi Lagoon, Burns Hall.
