Joan was a valiant advocate for teachers and students at Hawaii´s public schools. It was a pleasure serving with her on the Education Commission of the States. She was groundbreaking as a female leader. I admired how she cared for her family, especially her brother who enjoyed an independent life due to her support. We´ll miss having hot dogs with her! Aloha, Joan, and mahalo for everthing you did for Hawaii. Alan Oshima
