John Alves Obituary

JOHN FREDERICK ALVES JR. Born on June 6, 1944, in Bridgeport, CT, John passed away in late January 2024. After graduation from Trinity College (BA) and the University of Connecticut (MA studies). John moved to Hawai'i in the early 1970s, where he taught school at Waianae High School before returning for a short time to live and teach outside of Boston MA. Missing the embrace of Hawai'i John returned to a short time of farming on Hawai'i island and then back to Oahu where John primarily worked in the restaurant and restaurant supply business, Real Estate. John then moved on to publishing tourist and golf magazines before joining Honolulu Publishing Company as VP/Publisher and then to AIO Hawaii as President/Publisher and Strategic Advisor. For many years John also served on the board, and as board chair of Hawai'i Public Radio, his condominium association and the Hale 'Aina 'Ohana. John's true love of the culinary and restaurant industry is reflected in the annual Honolulu Hale Aina awards which John was instrumental in creating. John is survived by his wife Cheryl, dog Jackson, sister Judy Levine of Madison WI/San Diego CA, brother Jeffrey and Ann Kutaka of Honolulu, niece and nephew Bekah Lugo and Adam Levine, and their families all of San Diego CA. A renaissance man, John's life's personal passions included culinary magic, landscaping and plantings, art, music, wordsmithing and storytelling, being in and on the ocean, support of Public Radio and a deep embrace of Hawai'i nei. A celebration of John's life will be held on Monday March 4th from 9-11AM at the Outrigger Canoe Club during which John's ashes will spread on the ocean that he loved so deeply. Light refreshments will be served and all that wish to celebrate John's life are welcome. Those who wish to honor John with a remembrance are asked to do so with a donation in his memory to Hawai'i Public Radio, the Parkinson's Foundation and/or The American Cancer Society.
