John Cavanah Obituary

JOHN DAVID CAVANAH Born the eldest of twin boys on August 25, 1928 in Watsonville, California. He passed away on Feb. 9, 2023 at Kahala Nui with family by his side. He led a long and enviable life enjoying a large loving family and many friendships. John graduated from UC Berkeley in 1950 and joined the Hartford Insurance Company of San Francisco. He married Dolores Seeger on June 10, 1956 and they raised two children together. In 1962 he was offered a job opportunity in Hawaii at the Hawaii Casualty & Surety Rating Bureau and was eager to move to Hawaii. He eventually founded Cavanah Associates in 1976 whose specialty was commercial property and casualty with a focus on car dealerships. He also had one of the earliest CPCU designations in Hawaii and was very active in the local chapter where he advocated continuing education. John was married to second wife Sue for 30 years. They enjoyed playing golf together and traveling to many different countries of which Bali, Italy, Africa, and Tahiti were favorites. A proud long time member of Oahu Country Club for 52 years, he was an avid golfer. Often his golf clubs accompanied him on his many trips abroad. He was also a member of the Outrigger Canoe Club. A most generous man, he often contributed to his favorite charities - the Rotary Foundation, Salvation Army, the University of California at Berkeley, and many others. Predeceased by his sister and twin brother. He is survived by wife Sue, daughter Lisa Wagenaar, son John Cavanah (Kennesy), six grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. We all miss his loving nature, friendly smile, and easy-going ways. Private scattering of ashes will be held at a later date.
