John Payne Obituary

JOHN ROBERTS PAYNE January 17, 1946-October 9, 2024 John was born in Honolulu to parents John Howard Payne and Elene Roberts Payne. He was a lifelong time resident of Manoa Valley until his death. Growing up and spending time at Kawela Bay and Punaluu with his hanai family, John developed his love for the ocean. After graduation from Roosevelt High School in 1964, he attended Maunaolu College and the University of Hawaii at Manoa before his National Guard unit was activated to serve in the Vietnam War. Upon his return, John joined the Honolulu Police Department, a career which spanned nearly 30 years. In 1972, John met the love of his life Catherine Kaiulani Gedge. They had a wonderful marriage of 50 years. John enjoyed the ocean, working with his hands, and he had an amazing green thumb. John was humble, loyal, and hard working. His spirit lives on in his wife Cathy, son Zachary Mahiohao, (Kelly Maunakea), and grandchildren Eliana, Micaiah, Jude, and Nava. Predeceased by sisters Katherine Payne and Lisa Leidle. Private services pending. Arrangements Provided By: Oahu Mortuary
