John Scrivener Obituary

JOHN THOMAS SCRIVENER, JR. John Thomas Scrivener passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at home. He was surrounded by his family and his partner of 23 years. Mr. Scrivener was born on November 7, 1942 and lived most of his youth in Leonardsville, MD. He attended Saint Mary's College of Maryland and was graduated from the University of Maryland. He worked for Control Data in Hawaii and Vietnam after which he worked in financial services in Hong Kong. He will be best known and remembered for his construction of the "Little John Thomas" a 65' long range sport fishing boat. It was built from a hull purchased from Vietnamese refugees who brought it through a typhoon to Hong Kong in the mid 70's. The boat was noted for its robust design and elegant classic lines. Unfortunately, while moored in Kaheohe Bay, a fire on New Year's Eve, in 1999, resulted in its total loss. He enjoyed cooking for family and friends, learning from them to make everything from laulaus to Calabrian sauces to Afghan rice. He grew vegetables and papayas; he enjoyed the ocean, hiking, his grandchildren and Scrabble. Mr. Scrivener is survived by John Scrivener III, Christie Scrivener and James Scrivener of Kailua and Eric Petersen of Post Falls, Idaho; 7 grandsons: Pohaku, Kainalu, Ekolu, Akamu, Kamaehu, Finnster and Sterling and 1 granddaughter: Chloe and his partner, Louise Minervino.
