JOHN WEBSTER Obituary

JOHN MARK WEBSTER III John Mark Webster III - Mark, to his family and friends - passed away on October 30, 2023 at the age of 83. Mark was born on November 25, 1939 in Fresno, California to Jane and Jack Webster. He grew up in San Francisco until the age of eleven, when he moved with his family to Beirut, Lebanon for his father's work. He finished 6th, 7th and 8th grades in Beirut and saw much of the Middle East and Europe during those years. Then it was back to San Francisco for a couple of years, before he attended Punahou Academy in Honolulu as a boarding student, graduating in 1958. At 17 years old, during summer vacation from Punahou, Mark flew around the world to visit his parents in Turkey! Mark earned a BS in Geology from California State University in Fresno in 1962 and then joined the Navy. He served in the Pacific, Vietnam and spent some time in Guam. His ship also provided power to Anchorage, Alaska after their big earthquake in 1964. He was in the Naval Reserve for several years, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. He lived on the Big Island and finally in Honolulu for the rest of his life. Mark made numerous trips to Japan after retiring, as well as trips to the Mainland to visit family. Mark was active in many organizations, including the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), where he published the monthly newsletter for 17 years and served as president. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was a stalwart member and supporter of the Hawai'i Republican Party and all things conservative. Mark is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Helene Goto Webster; Stepson Paul H. Goto; sister Melinda Webster (Chuck) Shults, nieces Lt. Col. Jennifer Aasland and Jaime Shults, all of Minnesota; and granddaughter Jacqueline Griggs. His good nature and natural charm, along with his optimism and generosity had a lasting impact on all who know him. He made this world a better place. A memorial service will be held at Punchbowl on June 4, 2024 at 10:30 AM. All are welcome to attend.
