John Wilkerson Obituary

JOHN ARNOLD WILKERSON John Arnold Wilkerson, known to his friends and family as Jack, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2025. He was born on November 10, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri. Jack found his true home in Hawaii, arriving in the summer of 1959 to attend the University of Hawaii. A year later he met the love of his life, Maile, and together they settled in Lanikai where they lovingly raised their three daughters. Jack quickly embraced the vibrant culture and people of Hawaii, becoming a true Hawaiian at heart. He dedicated over 30 years to education, beginning his teaching and coaching career at Kahuku High School before moving to Kailua High School, and finally becoming the Occupational Skills Program Coordinator for the Windward District of Oahu. During these years he continued to inspire countless students. A man of many talents, there wasn't a home project Jack wouldn't tackle or a problem he couldn't fix. Friends and family could always count on him to lend a helping hand or tool, a testament to his generous spirit. Jack was also an avid UH football fan and enjoyed golfing twice a week well into his 80s with a close group of friends, Jack is survived by his wife Maile, daughters Kellie (Bart) Ulansey, Tracy Behler, Erin (Mark) Maretzki, grandchildren Kainoa Behler, Kekoa Ulansey, Nohea Behler, Kai Ulansey, Quinn Maretzki, Noa Ulansey, Jack Maretzki, great-granddaughter Hilina'i Naluai, and brother Joe Wilkerson. There will be a private celebration of life in December. Arrangements Provided By: Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary LLC

I have so many fond memories of Tracy and I playing in her yard while Uncle Jack was this quiet presence, always fixing or building something. After high school, we both went to Colorado colleges and then moved to San Francisco in simiar timeframes and we would still see each others parents. My parents still live in Kailua and while not as active as they once were loved to see Uncle Jack and Aunti Maile at the hardware or craft stores. A hui hou, Uncle Jack. Me ke aloha pumehana - Noelani & Chris.

Jack was a sweet, kind human being from my short interactions with him. My heart is with his family during this difficult time.

I first met John when he arrived as a UH freshman to live in our family's backyard apt attached to our house. He was a hurdler for the UH track team so I connected with him because I was a hurdler at my high school. Being the only child, I considered him as a big brother. He and I spent time being coached by my father at the old Cooke Field, and we even studied together at the Sinclair Library. Those days will always be with me. Blessings to Maile and family.

To Maile and the girls, my deepest sympathy. As you know I have kept in touch with Jack over all these years. I was also able to come to your home a couple of times. Jack was a special friend and I will miss him. In his last message to me he said maybe I will see you on the other side. I hope that comes true.
