JONATHAN STARR Obituary

JONATHAN STARR Jonathan Starr, 73, of Woodstock, NY, and Maui, HI, passed away March 5, 2025. Born in NYC on March 15, 1951, he was a loving husband and father; traveler, adventurer, and businessman; lifetime student of the world; and dedicated civic leader. He left high school to hitchhike across the U.S., working as an itinerant mechanic. He spent seven years living and studying at the Bihar School of Yoga in India, where he was ordained as Swami Bhaktananda. During a six-year vow of silence, he built and managed the school's printing operation and motor pool, and carried out diplomatic duties. Later, he lived in Kenya, exploring the back country by motorcycle. Back in NYC, he was Chief Operating Officer of his family's business, Artkraft Strauss Sign Corp., creators of Times Square's celebrated supersigns. Retiring to Maui in 1994, he turned to civic work: chairing the Maui Planning Commission, Democratic Party, and Boys & Girls Club; and serving on the Hawaii State Water Commission, Maui Water Board, and Kaupo and Wailuku Community Associations. He was a licensed pilot, boat captain, and Amateur Radio Extra Class operator; a beekeeper, woodworker, photographer, avid reader, historian, and musicianplaying the electric bass in bands across the U.S., Japan, Germany, and Puerto Rico. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen Nielsen, companion in adventures for 43 years; his daughter, Julie Torres Payne (Maurice); his sister, Tama Starr; his cat, Iao; many nieces and nephews, and countless friends on whose lives he made a lasting impact. A memorial celebration will be held in Woodstock, NY on May 17. He lived boldly, learned endlessly, and gave generously. He will be deeply missed.
