Jong Chew Obituary

JONG MING CHEW Jong Ming Chew passed away on May 19, 2023 at 87. Born in 1935 in Atlanta, Georgia when there were very few Chinese families in the city, Ming's parents operated a laundry while raising their five children. He attended Henry Grady High School where he was on the gymnastics team, a Lt. Col in the ROTC program, and an Eagle Scout. He then attended Georgia Tech on an ROTC scholarship and graduated with a degree in chemical engineering. He was commissioned into the U.S. Navy and achieved the rank of Lt. Commander. Ming served on the battleship USS Wisconsin, sister ship of the USS Missouri, and fired the 16" guns. After being honorably discharged, he joined ExxonMobil before earning his MBA from Stanford. Ming visited Hawaii in 1973 to consult on a project for Dillingham Corp. He loved the island and later joined a local real estate consulting firm and was appointed as chairman to the state's Council on Revenues. He married Shirleyanne in 1977 and had two children. Ming later founded his own real estate consulting firm and worked on numerous projects throughout Hawaii. Many knew Ming as an avid wine connoisseur, a member of the Honolulu Exchange Club, and an antique expert, running "Ming's Antiques." He persevered through a hospice stay and years of dialysis. He was able to walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding and meet his first grandchild. Ming is survived by his wife, Shirleyanne, children Jon and Jianna, grandsons Jordan and Harrison, and sister Alys Yeh. Arrangements Provided By: Nuuanu Memorial Park & Mortuary LLC
