JOSEPH SOUZA Obituary

JOSEPH JOE ROBERT SOUZA Age 87, of Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii, passed away on October 10, 2025. A graduate of St. Louis School, he was an All-American candidate in the 60s as a baseball pitcher and went on to earn a PhD in Clinical Psychology. His tenure at Straub Clinic and Hospital, Fronk Clinic and Pearlridge Medical Center on Oahu spanned a period of 25 years as a practitioner and administrator. He served as an advisor for the Easter Seals and the Heart Association for 10 years. During his college days, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves as a Petty Officer First Class as a member of aviation fighter squadron VF-873 based out of Oakland, California. After retirement, he returned to his Big Island home with his wife Mae and operated multiple businesses in Waimea; namely Souza's Furniture, Kamuela Feed Store, Certified Tax Service, Waimea Ranch House and Ashley's Sandwich Shop. He loved to stay active, playing softball in the Kamuela Softball League with the Waimea Paniolo and Pu'ukapu teams as a player for 15 years. An avid car buff, he restored many antique vehicles and had one of the more unique car collections in Hawai'i. As an active member of Annunciation Parish, he participated in various functions of the church, and was proud of his participation as a lector for many years. He is survived by his wife of 37 years; Mae, daughter Ashley, son Robert (Bobby), sisters-in-law Susan Hasegawa, Sandra and Laurie Hayashida, as well as brothers-in-law Myles Hasegawa and Alan Hayashida. He lived life to the fullest, and helped so many in his personal and professional life. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace Joe.
