JULIETTE LUM Obituary

JULIETTE Y.N. LUM Juliette Yen Ngnit Lum, 94, of Honolulu passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024 at her residence at 15 Craigside. She was born on July 29, 1930 to Arthur and Bernice Chun in Honolulu and graduated from McKinley High School. She earned her Bachelor of Elementary Education and Fifth-Year teaching certificate from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She taught in Hawaii's public elementary schools for 25 years before retiring in 1985. She is survived by her three children, Elliot; Jennifer Lum-Ota (Gerald); and Ellery (Heidi); sisters Helena Chun and Loretta Gerzina; and grandchildren Benjamin and Daniel Ota, and Matthew and Noah Lum. She was predeceased by her husband, George T.Y. Lum, to whom she was married for over 61 years, sisters Phyllis Takatsuka and Jacqueline Tom, and brother Calvin Chun. Juliette was very active in teachers organizations throughout her career. She served as President of: the Oahu Classroom Teachers Organization, the Oahu Education Association, the Honolulu Chapter of the Hawaii State Teachers Association, and the Hawaii Education Association, where she served on the HEA Board and Executive Committee for several years and attended national meetings leading her chapter's delegation. She was invited into membership of the Delta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, an honorary organization of women educators, where she also served as President of her chapter. She was a member of the Community Church of Honolulu for seven decades and sang in the choir for many years. She was a talented seamstress, served as President of the American Sewing Guild in Honolulu, and was active with the Palolo Chinese Home Auxiliary and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Community Church of Honolulu, 2345 Nuuanu Avenue on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Visitation from 10:00am with service to follow at 11:00am. Private inurnment will be on January 21 at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
