Kapua and Kamaka Sproat invited me into their home and family so I could attend summer school at the Church College of Hawaii (now BYU- Hawaii). Their kids were 12, 9, 6, and 3 and I slept on a cot in a room with Anuenue and Maile. I was an 18 year old committed Catholic from L. A. The family´s example and love changed the whole trajectory of my life in the best way possible!
I loved learning about the Hawaiian culture. I loved "talking story" combined with eating and more eating. Kapua´s unique background was amazing and I even got to spend time with Tutu Lady and see THE CAR. It was a unique privilege to be welcomed into their Ohana! Kapua was so bright and goal-oriented. When she spoke of running and swimming laps right up until giving birth it was mind blowing. When I would ride a bike in the dark to see a friend I worried if it was safe (Hauula). Kapua would tell me to wear my hair down in front of my face and just grunt at someone if they bothered me My heart will always treasure her broad smile and readiness to laugh. We kept in touch sporadically for the last 54 years, and she is definitely one of my heroes
