KATHERINE SAU YING YOUNG Katherine Sau Ying Young, 104, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. "Popo," as she was known to those who loved her, left a legacy of perseverance through adversity, devotion to family and strength through humor. Katherine was born in San Francisco in 1921 to Hong Lee and Shee Leong Lee. Food was Katherine's love language. She took special joy in cooking and sharing the food she prepared; dishes such as sticky sweet gau, complex, tasty jai, chewy jin dui and soft pillows of half moons were lovingly prepared in her tiny Palolo kitchen as an ultimate expression of love and care for her family. So many fond memories and stories started around Popo's dinner table with plate after plate of delicious food made by her loving hands. Katherine was preceded in death by her loving husband Hook Kin Young and daughter Lori Young Kimura, and is survived by daughters Janice Torres, Karen Matsumoto and Kathy Dang, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, all of whom will never forget the love and life lessons Popo brought to their lives. A celebration of life for Katherine Young will be held on June 20, 2025 at Borthwick Mortuary Mauka Chapel, 1330 Maunakea Street. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am with service to follow at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made to Hawai'i Foodbank in Katherine's name to help nourish families in our community as she has done with her own.
