KAYLENE MASON Obituary

KAYLENE JUNE MASON Kaylene June Mason was born June 1, 1943 in Pepe'ekeo, Hawaii, and passed away on June 14, 2023 at the age of 80 due to complications from a stroke. She was the eldest daughter of Woodrow and Dorothy Katsunuma and attended University High School in Honolulu. After Kaylene married Ernest Mason, they moved to the country in Mendocino County, California, where Ernest's family lived. They moved back to Honolulu to be near Kaylene's family after their daughters were born. Kaylene attended the University of Hawaii, obtaining a B.A. in English Literature. Kaylene then started a long career in the UH Bookstore system, first as the Bookstore Manager at Honolulu Community College and then as Director of the UH Bookstore. She employed many students at HCC and UH, and was nicknamed "Lady" by them. She loved to travel, going to the ballet and watching tearjerker movies, and was very family-oriented. Nothing made her happier than spending time with her grandchildren. Kaylene is survived by her mother Dorothy Katsunuma, husband Ernest Mason, sister Diane Ikegami, daughters Diane and Carrie Mason, grandchildren Rachel Nakatsu, Lily Rockholt and Zachary Thomas, and great-granddaughter Naia Nakatsu. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the following individuals who helped care for Kaylene during her last days: Hannah Hurvitz, St. Francis Hospice; Charles Morris, PCH; and Mely Balmilero, PCH. A Celebration of Life will be held for Kaylene at noon on June 8, 2024 at 1448 Young Street, Honolulu, in the Rec Room on the first floor. There is limited visitor parking in the garage, but plentiful street parking.

I am sorry about this late posting, but I just heard about Kaylene's passing. We both attended UH Lab School and she was one of my dearest friends. My sincerest sympathy to Ernie and Kaylene's family.

Kaylene was a lovely woman & I was privileged to have been part of her life, if only for a short time.

Kaylene was a lovely lady. I was privileged to participate in her care. She was well loved by her family who were supportive & spent every day with her.
