KRISTEN MUNCHMEYER LUNING With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Kristen Munchmeyer Luning at the age of 72. She passed away peacefully at home in Keaau, Hawaii, on January 17, 2025. A devoted tutu, Kristen was a loving wife to Mark (deceased), a dedicated mother to Karie and Jesse Grune, and a doting grandmother to Isaac and Bronson Klein. She was also a cherished sister to Leslie (Richard) McCormick, Kurt (Sharyn) Munchmeyer, and Kathy (Henry Hand) Munchmeyer, as well as a beloved aunty to numerous nieces and nephews. For the past 20 years, she shared a deep and loving partnership with Patrick Fix, whose companionship brought her great joy and endless laughter. Born in Connecticut (where she won "Most Beautiful Baby" contest) to Frederick and Janet Munchmeyer, Kristen's early life took her to Kailua, Oahu when her father was stationed there with the Coast Guard. She was a proud graduate of Kailua High School (Class of 1970), the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and Heritage College. A highly respected teacher for around 30 years, Kristen's passion for education was evident not only in the lessons she taught but in the lasting connections she built with her students. Driving through Hilo, she would often hear the familiar call of, "Heeeyy, Miss! How youuuu?" a testament to the impact she had on so many young lives. She was also one of the first StarTeachers (Astronomy) who traveled with the others to Chile. Kristen embraced life with enthusiasm and an adventurous spirit. She had a deep love for travel, recalling every experience with vivid detail. She found immense joy in sharing meals with family and friends, never turning down an opportunity for a new adventure. Her passions spanned art, cooking, raising animals, music, and sports. Her curiosity and zest for life knew no bounds. She will be remembered for her radiant smile, gentle and loving nature, and unwavering loyalty to those she loved. Though her presence will be profoundly missed, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and cherished her. May she rest in peace.
