Laura Miho Obituary

LAURA MASUKO MIHO In Loving Memory 1928-2024 With heavy hearts, we celebrate the life of our beloved mother, Laura M. Miho, who peacefully passed away on December 27, 2024, at the age of 96. A cherished matriarch, she exemplified resilience, grace, and enduring strength throughout her remarkable journey. Born in Honolulu, Hawai'i, in 1928 to the late Koichi and Nobu Iida, our mother was a proud second-generation Japanese American whose life was marked by profound challenges and remarkable triumphs. As a young girl, she endured the heartbreaking loss of her mother and the unjust incarceration of her father by the U.S. government during World War II due to his Japanese heritage. These injustices profoundly shaped her values, inspiring her to live with kindness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to her family and tradition. Through the turbulence of the war and its aftermath, she carried herself with dignity and perseverance, transforming adversity into a lasting legacy of strength. Despite her hardships, our mother never wavered in her dedication to the values she held dear. Her life was a testament to kindness, hard work, and abiding gratitude. Whether nurturing her children and grandchildren, tending to her home and hobbies, or fostering meaningful connections with family and friends near and far, her hands and heart were constantly engaged in acts of love. Our mother found purpose and fulfillment in her work and community involvement. She was proud of her time at the East-West Center and the UH College of Education, where she contributed to fostering understanding and collaboration among people from diverse cultures. Her unassuming wisdom, humility, and quiet strength left an indelible mark on all fortunate to know her. She was a living testament to the enduring spirit of her ancestors and an inspiration to her descendants, who now carry forward her legacy of resilience and compassion. Our mother is survived by her children: Mariko (Kandy), Arthur (Lani), Celia Miho Fujikami (Derek), and Ann Miho-Johnson (Jackie); seven grandchildren; her brother, Robert Iida; and countless nieces, nephews, and dear friends whose lives she touched with her warmth, wisdom, laughter, and joy. She was predeceased by her husband, the late Katsugo Miho, her parents, sisters, and brother. As we bid farewell to our mother, we honor her love, strength, and perseverance legacy. Let us strive to embody her grace, courage, and generosity in her memory, ensuring her spirit continues shining brightly in the lives of all privileged to know her. A public service will be held on January 23, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Hosoi Garden Mortuary, with visitation beginning at 5:00 p.m. The family kindly requests no flowers or koden (monetary gifts) in lieu of flowers. Rest in peace, dear Mom. You will live forever in our hearts. Arrangements Provided By: Hosoi Garden Mortuary

In Loving Memory of Mrs. Miho

I was heartbroken to learn of Mrs. Miho´s passing. When I think of her, I see a woman of unspoken strength and extraordinary grace, someone who enriched every life she touched. She carried herself with quiet resilience, moving through the world with intention, kindness, and care. Her influence extended beyond words, shaping a home where traditions were honored, hospitality was second nature, and love was expressed in even the smallest details.

What began as a working relationship quickly became a true friendship, built on trust and shared moments. Over the years, as I spent time in their home, that trust deepened. At first, it was the three of us: Judge Miho, Mrs. Miho, and me, sharing conversations, meals, and quiet moments of understanding. Later, after he had departed, it was just the two of us, moving through the spaces that still carried his presence.

Outside, the soft mist of Manoa rain fell against the windows as we sorted through what remained. It came and went in waves, lingering just long enough to leave everything glistening before moving on. The rhythm of it filled the silence, steady and unbroken. Charlie, the Kolea that Judge Miho had named, continued to return. We marveled at it, watching as he made his long journey from Alaska, finding his way back to the same familiar place year after year. His return was a quiet reminder that life moves forward, even as some things remain the same.

She had a way of offering wisdom, not through grand statements, but in the way she lived. A lesson given in passing, a subtle encouragement, a quiet nod toward something deeper. She had a way of showing you the answers before you even knew the question. Her presence shaped those around her, not through force but through the quiet constancy of her being.

She carried herself with grace, showing love not through words alone, but in the way she cared for her home, honored her traditions, and extended kindness to those around her. Even in the little kozara she arranged at her table, there was meaning. Every dish was placed with intention, every meal an offering of love and connection. Sitting at that table, I came to understand that the smallest details often hold the greatest significance.

Knowing her changed the course of my life. Her presence, her way of moving through the world, and her thoughtful and intentional kindness shaped how I live my own life. She reminded me that a life lived with care and grace carries an influence far beyond what is seen.

For those of us who were fortunate enough to know her, her legacy is not something we see but something we feel. It lingers in the way we sit at a table, in the rhythm of conversations, and in the care placed into even the smallest rituals. The house will change with time, but in its traditions, she will always remain-just as her presence will continue to be felt beyond its walls, in the lives she touched and the values she quietly instilled.

With deepest gratitude and respect,

Jason Hansen
