Lawrence Judd Obituary

LAWRENCE MCCULLY JUDD, III January 3, 1945 February 25, 2023 Born in Honolulu to Lawrence McCully Judd and Ruth Elizabeth Judd, Cully lived most of his life happily in Oahu. He was proud to continue his family's legacy by attending both Hanahauoli and Punahou schools, there he made a lifetime of friends and met his future wife, Carol Silva. Cully left for college and attended Menlo College and Chaminade, then spent some time in Thailand and sailed around the world on an international catamaran before coming back to Honolulu. Cully always loved to have a good laugh as he truly was one of a kind. In the early 70's Cully pioneered the solar energy industry, first with his father and then with his wife Carol, from there he added a large team. He knew that if he could help reduce Hawaii's dependence on imported fossil fuels, not only would he be perpetuating pono, but he would also be ultimately contributing to a better future for Hawaii and helping to bring world peace. From the humble beginnings in his garage, Cully built Inter-Island Solar Supply, a comprehensive one stop-shop for both solar thermal and photovoltaic energy. Recognizing the energy industry's dependence on policy, he helped create the Hawaii Solar Energy Association which still is in place today. His fascination with manufacturing led him to the mainland where he acquired the SunEarth brand which is the nation's largest flat plate collector manufacturer. He achieved success by providing quality reliable products, innovative and sound business relationships all while maintaining a strong sense of gratitude for his staff and customers. Cully eventually found the best way to continue his mission was to sell the business to its employees as an ESOP. In addition to his career in solar, he lived for adventures through vehiclesvehicles of all kinds, dirt bikes, jeeps, roadsters, boats, flat beds, forklifts, bobcats, excavators just to name a few. Unfortunately, he did not get to enjoy his last purchase a Hilo Sampan. Cully loved his wife Carol and the family they raised togetherafter Carol's battle with breast cancer he was lost without the love his life and died of a broken heart. Survived by his daughters Julie Judd Yani and Meleana Judd Cox, grandchildren Mason and Leila Yani, Kenui and Stuardt Judd-Cox. We will celebrate Cully on May 13, 2023 at 12:00 pm at his North Shore home, Waihuena Farm. Donations can be made in his name at Hawaii Solar Energy Association and Punahou School.
