LINUS PAULING Obituary

DR. LINUS CARL PAULING JR. Dr. Linus Carl Pauling Jr. died on June 10, 2023 at the age of 98 at home with his wife, Stephanie, at his side. He was born in Pasadena, California on March 10, 1925, graduated from high school in 1943 and served in the United States Army Air Force from1943-1946. He attended Pomona College from1946-1948 and graduated from Harvard Medical School with the degree of MD in 1952. The promise of beautiful weather year-round and images on Pan American posters lured him to Honolulu and The Queen's Hospital where he interned and completed a psychiatric residency there and at the Territorial Hospital. He practiced general and forensic psychiatry from 1956 until retiring in 1990. In addition to private practice, Dr. Pauling served as Chief of the Psychiatric Service and Director of the Mental Clinic at The Queen's Hospital and as the first Psychiatrist at the Counseling and Testing Center, University of Hawaii. After retirement, he served as President and Chairman of the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine. Other community service included President, Mental Health Association of Hawaii; member and President of the Hanahauoli School Board of Directors; member of the American Civil Liberties Union, and several other boards. His hobbies included book collecting, reading, sailing, water skiing, woodworking and early Porsche restoration. He was a founding member of the Hawaii chapter of The Porsche Club of America and Hawaii 356 Registry. Dr. Pauling is survived by his wife Stephanie Sachie Pauling, sister Linda Kamb, children Linus Fowler, Peter Chadwick, Christopher Carl, Ramona Berent, Sabrina Pauling, Carrie Walter, fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
