LYNN COOK Obituary

LYNN COOK Lynn Maureen Kawaileleowa'ahila (Jacobsen) Cook passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, with her beloved family by her side. She is survived by her two granddaughters, Lindsey and Lauren Allen, and her extended ohana, including her hanai son Earl Bowers. Lynn's daughters, Elizabeth "EE" (Cook) Allen and Terry (Logan) Green, grandson Alex Green, and her husband Richard Hardy preceded her in death. Born in Bremerton, Washington, in 1942, Lynn was raised on the beaches of Puget Sound and in the forests of the Olympic Mountains. A printmaker, travel and cultural tourism writer, photographer, and graphic artist, Lynn was an active member of the Honolulu Printmakers and a freelance writer for a wide variety of publications, including the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hana Hou Magazine, Hawai'i Magazine, Ka Wai Ola, and many more. Moving to Hawai'i in 1963, she began a 60-year love affair with Hawai'i's ancient petroglyphs -- na ki'i pohaku. She researched and photographed carved designs and petroglyphs around the Pacific Rim while writing about her travels. She studied at the University of Washington and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and was a lifelong student of art, anthropology, and culture. Lynn also practiced hula for many years under her treasured Kumu Hula Mapuana de Silva in Halau Mohala 'Ilima. An expert on petroglyph interpretation, an award-winning writer and artist, and a teacher of Hawaiian arts and culture, Lynn's impact on Hawai'i will be felt for many years and will always be remembered. Despite her acclaimed career, Lynn's greatest source of joy and adventure was her family. She raised her daughter, Elizabeth, on O'ahu where Elizabeth attended Punahou (Class of 85). Her granddaughters had the honor of growing up with Hawai'i as their second home and continue to reside in Washington state. Lynn later married her beloved Richard and cherished the time she spent sharing her love of Hawai'i with him, family, friends, and extended ohana around the world. Lynn's ashes will be spread in a canoe to rejoin her daughter and husband off the coast of O'ahu. Services will be held at the Outrigger Canoe Club on Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, at 2:00 pm.

Lynn was my sister Terry's bio-mom, and I had the good fortune to spend an afternoon with her once when we all happened to be in Hawaii at the same time. She was so excited to show me around, and she drove us around and told us all about the island. I was fortunate to be able to get to know her a little more after that over the years. Even though I didn't know her terribly long, she became an important part of my story. Thank you for everything, Lynn.

Lynn will always hold a special place in my heart. In 1970, after graduating high school, I left Southern California to discover Hawaii. Somehow, soon after I arrived in Waikiki, I was lucky enough to find Lynn, along with her then husband David and their beautiful little daughter, Elizabeth. Lynn asked me to stay with them in their Waikiki apartment where I would watch Elizabeth while she and David, a pharmacist, worked. We began a friendship that would last more than 50 years. Lynn showed me the true beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. One of my fondest memories is of Lynn and I collecting puka shells on the beach and making macrame necklaces to sell at the street markets. Another is of us putting small American flags on the graves in Punchbowl on Memorial Day. I learned so much about life from Lynn. I was 17 and she 27 so I appreciated her sage advice. Once I encountered a dangerous situation in Waikiki. Lynn was right there to care for me. I will always be grateful for her maternal instincts and the unconditional love she showed me . Lynn´s talent and her love for art and writing was an inspiration. I learned today that Lynn passed away last July. I am sending my love to you Lynn and saying goodbye for now.

In Loving Memory of Lynn Cook

Today, we gather to honor the life of Lynn Cook, a beloved friend whose kindness, warmth, and laughter touched all who knew her. In the words of Queen Lili`uokalani:

"Never cease to act because you fear you may fail. The true secret is to know your own worth."

Lynn embodied this truth in every moment-living fully, giving generously, and inspiring those around her with her courage and grace. Her life was a testament to love, compassion, and unwavering integrity.

"Aloha is more than a word of greeting; it is a spirit of love, peace, and compassion that connects us all."

Indeed, Lynn´s aloha lives on-in the memories we hold, the stories we share, and the quiet moments when we feel her presence near. Though she has departed from this world, her spirit continues to shine, eternal and unbroken.

May we honor Lynn by carrying forward her love, her laughter, and her kindness, keeping her memory alive in every act of compassion we share.

"We send Lynn Cook to the sea she loved, carried by the waves and surrounded by aloha. Her spirit flows with the ocean, and her memory remains in our hearts forever."

What sad news... Lynn was my boss at Fawcett, McDermott, Brink in the early `80s. She was my mentor and gave me excellent guidance. My 30-year career in PR started with the good foundation she provided. I didn´t see her much after moving back East, but she´s forever in my heart. When I worked there in the Moana center then downtown, Elizabeth was young and would nap on her office floor after school. Lynn lived up Punchbowl at the time in a bungalow. She drive a MG I think. We had many adventures. She took my to her interviews with Barbara Eden and Cary Grant on American Cruise Line ships. We had the Henry Moore statue unveiling downtown. So many great memories! She taught me about photography. Writing. So much. A real inspiration to me. She worked so hard. She was one of a kind. Love to you all.

Lynn was our fondest greeter as The S/Y Outreageous and crew passed Leahi Light at the end of TransPac 1977. She designed and executed shirts for the crew members and introduced me to my future Moku Nui neighbor, Kawika Roy. In the way of Hawai´i, over the years we would connect from time to time, pushed into nose to nose greetings as fate deemed necessary. Some day there will be reunion of friends from that time. In the meanwhile, A Hui Hou and Malama Pono!
