MARIA BORGES Obituary

MARIA DAMO BORGES 97, passed away peacefully at home in Honolulu on June 4, 2024. Born on August 20, 1926 to Restituto and Vesenta Damo in Kohala, Hawaii. The family moved to Oahu where she grew up at Kawailoa Plantation Camp. She worked at Pearl Harbor Naval Supply Center, then for the Federal Highway Administration and retired after 30 years of service. She started a second career as secretary to the executive director for The Friends of Iolani Palace and continued to assist its subsequent executive directors. After 32 years she retired at the age of 89. In between work and raising her family she travelled the world. Predeceased by her parents, husband George Borges, brothers Benjamin and Stephen Damo. Survived by son Michael (Charlotte) Borges, daughter Patricia (George deceased) Lindsey. Brothers Herman (Clara deceased) Damo, Jason Damo. Sisters Esther (Fred) Cablay, Linda (Richard) Samera, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She loved the Palace, the mission of The Friends of Iolani Palace and especially the annual celebration of King Kalakaua's birthday, which she took an active role in coordinating. To honor Maria's memory, we ask that a donation be made to The Friends of Iolani Palace in her name toward the King Kalakaua birthday celebration. Private Services.
