MARJORIE HIURA Obituary

MARJORIE HIURA Marjorie Hiura celebrated her 100th birthday on Aug. 5, 2024. Following her wishes, she remained at home, peacefully passing away on Nov. 25, 2024. Marge was preceded in death by her brother, Gilbert (Etta) Chun in 2004, and by her beloved husband, Colbert Hiura, in 2006. Together for almost 40 years, Marge and Colbert never lost the romance, joy, and mutual respect at the heart of a successful marriage. Marge was born in Honolulu, to Hyung Koon and Nancy Sabah Chun. Marge spent her early youth in San Diego. After the family returned to Hawaii, she attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1941. Marge attended business school then worked for a brief period at Pearl Harbor. She was a homemaker for most of her adult life, but when widowed in 2006, Marge demonstrated independence, resilience, and resourcefulness. She stayed in touch with the world. Family, friends, and dozens of charities benefited from her years-long generosity. Marge never stopped learning. She was a voracious reader and a prolific, skilled writer - constantly writing letters, little notes, journals, cards. Marge was a self-taught expert seamstress, with a fine sense of style. She will also be remembered for her quick wit, love of words, and as a skilled poker and mahjong player. Marge is survived by her three children - Laraine, Craig, and Brian (Susan Hodge) Hong; two grandchildren, Melia and Kory Hong; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Laurie (Walter) McEnery, Pamela (Daniel) Wilt, and Nathan Chun; Liane (Steve) Freitas; Laura (Alfred) Woods, Steve (Lesa) and Stacey Fukuchi. A memorial service will be held on Thurs., Dec. 19, at Borthwick Mortuary, Makai Chapel. Visitation is at 11:30 a.m., service at 12:30 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of floral or monetary gifts, donations be made to a charity of choice or to Hawaii Meals on Wheels.

I loved Marjorie's smile and one moonlit night when I was walking my dog, she commented on the beautiful full moon and we bonded over the loveliness of our street. We will miss Marjorie and her lovely smile and spirit. Our deepest condolence to the Family.
