It is with a heavy heart that I endure the loss of one of my absolute favorite teachers from Kalani High School. I still remember him trying to avoid wasting the tropical fish he had used in his science class by cooking them in the classroom and recommending us to eat them. He was one of the kindest and most patient people I had the pleasure of meeting in person, and I regret that I did not have the opportunity to revisit Kalani High, or even to Hawaii, for that matter, since my graduation in 1993. My heart goes out to all of his loved ones. May his beautiful soul be received by the heavens with the respect he deserves.

The Shanahans were neighbors in Virginia circa 1963 and due to the common Catholic /Irish heritage of our parents. Random events and birthday parties were interchanged as "kids would be kids" and seek playmates outside of the their respective multiple siblings. Mark was like a "good brother" to my younger brother Paul as they were equally matched in size &age. I extend my Aloha to all of the Shanahan Ohana.

Mr. Shanahan,
Thank you for believing in me and guiding me when I was a troubled student of yours at Kalani. I gave all my teachers a hard time and you all knew I didn´t want to be at school. But you didn´t let me fail. You told me I had to do better and if I didn´t, I´d regret it one day. I enjoyed your class and I enjoyed learning from you. If it wasn´t for you, I would´ve flunked my senior year and not have graduated on time. You pushed me to do better and you showed that you actually cared. You gave me extensions on projects and helped me with my tests. Thank you for everything. I´ll never forget your kindness.
